Me and Keith
When I first spoke to Keith, online, we got along well from the get-go. We quickly became friends, and were starting to move on to being a little bit more.
We went on a couple of dates: first out to dinner, a couple days later to a concert that was in town, and we continued to see each other pretty steadily. We started to confide in each other quite a bit more, which is when we discovered something about each other: we both had little brothers with cystic fibrosis, a fatal genetic disease which affects the lungs and digestive system.
Learning this about the other brought us closer than ever. We got involved in Cystic Fibrosis awareness events and fundraisers, met each others families, and became virtually inseparable. It didn’t take long before we moved in with each other, in a small apartment from which we could help our cystic fibrosis organizations.
I’d never met anybody like Keith. Of course, I had met other men my age through the cystic fibrosis organizations, other brothers of victims of the disease. None of them were like Keith though. He had never been involved in the organizations and charities, as he believed they pained him too much. When I told him how much his involvement could help his brother and other kids, however, he did come with me to the fundraisers and participated in the awareness campaigns. He was so different, compared to the other men I knew. He was caring and understanding, but also very independent. I completely felt like I could relate to him. We had already been getting along absolutely fabulously, but we completely fell in love with each other.
Now we’re married, and considering having kids, though we’re not completely sure we will due to the risk that they may also be born with cystic fibrosis, as it is a genetic disease that simply happened to skip us. We’re extremely happy together, and I thank God every day that my internet dating found me Keith, someone with whom I am completely in love and who understands exactly what I’m going through, and who can offer support.
