Hiking

I’m not the type of girl who commits easily. I go through boyfriends about as often as I change my underwear (and I’m very hygienic!). I suppose I never found Mr. Right. In a way, I still haven’t, as I’m now with Mr. Perfect and thinking about the future for the first time.

We met on a dating website about 6 months ago. A friend of mine convinced me to join a certain dating site to try and meet men, in a desperate attempt to try and have me keep a boyfriend for once. Well, I never really put much effort into it, though about 2 weeks after I registered I got a message from a man named Trevor. We shared similar interests: bungee jumping, amusement parks and rugby. After some pleading from my friends I decided to give him a shot. We had a typical first date, nothing fantastic, but when he asked for a second I surprised myself and agreed. Feeling more adventurous, we decided to go hiking the next weekend.

I’d gone hiking quite a few times before, so I was no novice. Trevor, it turns out, had about as much experience as I did. We went to the back woods of the city, where a small mountain range makes for great relaxing hiking. Halfway up Mt. Mary-Anne, I tripped over an exposed tree root, fell off the path and down a small ravine. Trevor immediately followed me, sliding down the ravine. My ankle had swelled to the size of a large orange and there was a large gash going down my leg. I started to take off my shoe, but Trevor stopped me, saying it was safer to leave it on. He immediately took control of the situation, removing his shirt and tearing it into strips to stop the bleeding of my leg, which was making me feel weak.

After he got the bleeding under control, I was pale from blood loss and had gone into shock. He gave me his coat to keep me warm, as by now evening had come around and the weather was cooling down significantly. I tried to move but Trevor wouldn’t let me, in case anything was broken. He called for help using his cell phone, and waited at the bottom of the ravine with me while the emergency workers came to get me. Eventually they found us and I was taken to the hospital, Trevor riding in the ambulance with me.

As I lay in the hospital that night, with 2 broken bones, a sprained ankle and a gashed leg I realized Trevor was just what I had been looking for. Someone who could take control of a situation. Someone who could take care of me. We continued to see each other, and now, 6 months later, we’re engaged to be married next May.
