My first date with Daniel was easily the worst I’ve ever been on, due to circumstances beyond our control. Daniel himself was smart, funny and cute. We met about a month before our date on a dating website, where we hit it off. Eventually we felt comfortable enough for a real meeting, a nice date. We planned what was supposed to be a pleasant evening at a restaurant.
We both love Thai food, so we went to the big Thai restaurant in the town, located in the centre of a strip mall. Halfway through our meal, Daniel got a call on his mobile phone. He ignored it, but the phone ran again one minute later, both calls from his sister. I urged him to answer it, as it may have been an emergency. He excused himself and came back a couple of minutes rather shaken. I learned that his little brother had been struck by a car when it ran a red light as he was crossing. We immediately paid for our meal and left. I offered to come to the hospital with him if he wanted me to, and he accepted.
Unfortunately, when we were stopped at a red light the car behind us accidentally nudged the back of the car, strongly enough to make a big dent in the back bumper. Thoroughly irritated at this point, Daniel exchanged insurance information and address with the other driver, and we made it to the hospital safely. Daniel’s brother, we learnt, would probably be alright, but he had a couple of broken bones and a pinched nerve. After this relief, Daniel and I realized just how terrible the date had been, interrupted by the news of his brother and the accident at the traffic light.
Luckily, we had another (much better) date a couple of days later, continued dating and have now been married for just over a year. Daniel told me just before we got married that one of the things that made him love me was the caring I demonstrated when I had offered to go to the hospital with him, even though I did not know his brother at all and barely knew Daniel.
